I have a crucified God …
Paul writes to the church in Corinth: [1 Corinthians 15] 1Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you— unless you believed in vain. 3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures … (next section to come on Easter Sunday).
The first part of the good news is the death of an innocent man. Not a good man, but a completely pure, righteous, loving, gracious and truly good man. It is the death of the God man. Luther put it well when he confronted our reason and simply said, I have a crucified God. For now, He lies in a tomb, in the darkness. He lies there to experience the fulness of human death as He had experienced the fulness of human life and suffering. Christ didn’t do this for just anyone. He did this for everyone. He did this once for all. He died for our sins. And guess what else got dragged into an unwitting death? Sin, Death, and the Devil. It is their end, too.
May God bless and keep you this GOOD Friday!
